The ‘Secret’ To Successful Blogging?

January 31, 2008 Posted under: Blogging by Caroline Middlebrook

A couple of days ago I talked about how difficult it is to make a living online when your business model always relies on knowing the ’secrets’ of the trade.

Blogging is no different - it’s a huge industry and there are many high powered blogs out there with some very wealthy bloggers. So of course many people want to know what the ’secret’ is. Just recently one of my readers asked me how he could write ‘high powered’ posts like me. I have a theory of blogging success, read on to see what it is…

Blogging Success in Terms of RSS Subscribers

Ok first up, for the context of this discussion I am going to refer to the RSS subscriber count as being the measure of success of a blog. There are a ton of other factors but the RSS count is generally accepted as being an important one and its certainly the one that I value most highly.

I use Feedburner to manage my RSS feed and my keeping track of my stats on a monthly basis I can glean all sorts of useful information. Looking at the monthly stats for the months of November, December and January has revealed a startling truth to me but before I tell you what it is, let’s have a look at those stats:

Here is November, notice how it shows growth near the beginning of the month and then after that odd jump in the middle (I still assume this is a feedburner problem not showing proper growth in the middle of the month) it starts to drop off and flatline:

november rss

Now the real giveaway is December - the RSS numbers just tick over not really moving at all:

december rss

But what’s happening in January? It’s still flatlining at first but after a couple of weeks we start to see signs of life and it grows again. Its grown by over 300 in January!

january rss

What Happened to My Subscribers?

In the middle of November I split up with my partner of 10 years (not my choice) and at first I was devastated. I could barely function. I’ve already blogged about this so I wont go over it all again but the effect it had on the blog is that all through the latter part of November and the whole of December I just blogged in maintenance mode.

I didn’t do any real work on any of my projects. I read my emails, responded to comments and managed to find a few affiliate programs to promote but I was basically blogging by the seat of my pants day by day and it showed in the numbers!

In January it started to change. I got back to work, I released my ebook and I started blogging in a way that was more in tune with my usual self and again, this has been reflected in the subscriber numbers!

The growth of my subscribers has been an almost perfect reflection of my personal state of mind. It has nothing to do with post count, or social media or anything else because I kept blogging the whole time!

What Does This Mean?

The conclusion that I draw from it is that the decision to subscribe or not to subscribe comes from something intangible - a feeling, an emotion, a vibe. Somebody comes to your blog, reads the content and if they feel good about it they subscribe and if not they hit the back button.

You can’t fake it - despite blogging all through December, my numbers would not increase. As far as I can tell my writing quality did not suffer in an obvious way, I don’t think somebody could give me a list of things I did wrong with my blog at that time.

I believe that when we write (or speak, or communicate in any way) that we give out the vibes of what we are feeling within ourselves. If we feel good it comes across in the writing. If we feel bad, that comes across too. That is the only explanation that I can think of for why my subscriber numbers came to a complete standstill when the rest of my life was at a standstill and only when I started moving forward on a personal level did my subscriber numbers follow suit!

This is another reason why I keep bashing sleazy marketing tactics. I believe that if I succumb to the sheep methodology and start churning out sales letters or build a list in a way that makes me feel uneasy that the prospective buyers will pick up on my negativity and it will affect the results!

So What’s The Secret Then?

In a nutshell I believe the secret to having a successful blog is to be true to yourself in what you write. Believe in what you are saying, enjoy your writing, appreciate your readers and their comments and it will show through.

If you force yourself to blog, if you write about topics that don’t interest you, if you get irritated having to respond to comments or contact emails you will send out those bad vibes to your audience and your blog will falter!

Be true and succeed :)

Truly a great job and yes I messure a blog by its redaers too please feel free to swing by my site and let me know what you think and what I can do to improve. Your views would be an insiration I am sure but keep in mind, it is less then 10 days old.

I agree that one needs to be true to oneself and write about what one is passionate about.

It has got to be more than just making money as the motivator for blogging. I have found blogging to be harder than first thought, but now into my third month I feel more strength to continue because I am blogging what I am interested in.

Good post by the way Caroline.
Cheers…

Caroline,

Do you think that November jump could be the aftermath of all the blogosphere word-of-mouth you had been getting for a few weeks? Michael Martine, Darren Rowse, Chris Brogan, and others were all writing about you and your work. Darren’s post was what sent me over here, but maybe it’s an aggregate thing for some, and once they’d seen your name everywhere, the time finally came to subscribe.

Not to get too personal, but I also think many subscribers stuck with you through a few less inspired posts because they felt they had a bond with you, through your story. That’s the benefits of “relationship marketing” at work: loyal readers root for you.

Regards,

Kelly

I think it’s impossible to fake it. If you don’t feel like posting, for whatever reason, you shouldn’t it. I’ve done it a few times, and the result is nearly always a boring post.

The reason your Jan subscriber increased alot is becoz of the ebook viral marketing effect. I found links to your blog from 2 of the most prominent bloggers in Malaysia.

AFAIK, the other ebook on Wordpress (& Adsense) cost at least $67. Yours is free.

I have spent 2 full days digesting all posts in this blog (choke full with gold nuggets) … I really cannot decided which path to choose for my project.

1) Create a very good FREE ebook/software, let it become viral & monetise later.

2) Create a very good ebook/software (which I already had 9 years of research) and charge let say $99. The next trick is to contact prominent bloggers and selectively make them affiliates. Using their affiliate links, the ebook will get discount say, $20. And the remaining $79 is split between me and the affiliate.

However, I feel that there is a loophole if we let ANYONE to become affiliate.

Any cheapskate can sign up, and then use their own affiliate links to buy the product (and then never advertise the product & never intend to.)

Quote;start churning out sales letters or build a list in a way that makes me feel uneasy that the prospective buyers will pick up on my negativity and it will affect the results!

Absolutely agree with this statement, Caroline, content in your own unique voice, stay the course

@Kelly, no the sudden spurt at the beginning of November was the result of those people talking about me, I still don’t know what happened in the middle - looks like a glitch to me.

@Badrulnazar, that’s exactly what I would like to know too. Once I have exhausted all of the marketing options for my free ebook I intend to charge a cover price for the next one and see how they compare in terms of overall revenue though as you say, the free ebook also send me lots of blog publicity.

The reason why I subscribed to your blog is because almost every day it teaches me something (and I haven’t even had the chance of reading all your old posts, which I will do someday!)
Of course everyone writes better when they feel good (not only bloggers). If you don’t feel good, you don’t feel like writing; if you don’t feel like writing but do it anyway, it is going to come out through your writing.
Glad to see you are feeling better!

Hi, Caroline. Congratulations on your decision to quit 9to5; many bloggers are living that dream vicariously through you. Declaring your intention to the universe is the most important step. The rest will come. I’ll share my calming mantra if you can use it : Relax. Trust. Expect.

Many have commented about your honesty and your humanity, both of which come through in your posts. Neither state of being is always pretty but you paint it fairly.

On the topic of feed readers, I used to but I stopped. I lose too much of the personality of the blogger. I prefer just go to their site. If one reads 20 feeds a day, then feedreaders make sense. The rest of us are having a conversation rather than just soaking up data. To each his own, but I wonder if RSS is a really a good way to estimate readership. If I understand Google Analytics correctly, they tell you how many visitors you get in a day, right? I think Feedburner does too but I don’t really get Feedburner (though I know it should be easy). Hey, there’s an article for you…compare the 2 systems!

Very glad to meet you.

You should also know it is very easy to forge and fake the number of RSS Subscribers, especially when it comes to subscribing via Email. Some even steal it from others. You should have heard that. I personally don’t take into consideration the number of RSS subscribers to decide if a blog is doing well or not, if it is a top blog or not. I just look at the content and sometimes the traffic(when i can).

The reason I subscribe to your blog is “TRUST” because the tone and the information in your posts come across as genuine and transparent. I’m getting details in a way I can relate to and trust.

Keep it up.

How true !! And it doesn’t just affect RSS subscibers in my opinion. As well as blogging and designing web sites, I work as a homeopath. I am certain that my emotional state is reflected in the number of new clients I get. If I’m feeling good and upbeat, I get more new clients. If I’m feeling down, my new client numbers go down.

It applies in all areas of life, I’m sure. I think what you’re describing is the Law of Attraction. We get back what we give out.

I applaud your honesty and courage in talking about this issue on your blog.

Well said Caroline! I’ve commented from the side of Devil’s Advocate in a few of your recent posts–I like to shake the tree and see what falls in that way–but I really thought the follow up conversations were great additions to your original postings and appreciated the candid and honest opinions of yourself and others being posted.

Truth is I’m right with you on this and your honest approach to openly discussing it is what keeps me coming around so often.

Finding people seeking help and then stepping in-front of them online with “promises” that our product will satisfy their itch… that’s an easy model to build money with but I doubt any of us thought as kids that’s what we’d grow up to do with our lives.

Keep staying true to yourself, it’s the best path to personal success; and isn’t that what’s really important after all?

@Christine, you sound like a LoA believer :) With regards to feedburner / google… the biggest difference in my opinion is that a subscriber has shown some kind of loyalty - they have decided that this feed is one they want to keep reading. A visitor from google may have just stopped by never to be seen again.

@Kabatology, yes it can be faked but of course I know my own isn’t faked so it doesn’t really matter does it!

@Roger, yes I agree entirely. I discovered LoA back in October and I find it working for me in many ways though on this blog I try to describe things in non-LoA ways that make sense to the people who have never heard of it.

@Scott, hehe that’s ok I do like to see a good discussion in the comments - it’s what blogs are all about.

Hi Caroline
I’m one of your new subscribers and I instantly liked your writing style. Whilst there’s a ton of ‘how to make money on the net’ blogs there’s only a very few I subscribe to and read regularly now (otherwise I could be reading all day - lol). It’s true that personality shines through writing and draws people in.
I’m sorry to hear you’ve been through a difficult time but delighted to see how well you’re doing - just read your stats for this month! I’ve not quit the day job just yet but having been running one blog for 6 months and just launched a new one I’m staring to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Blogs such as yours are a real inspiration and I look forward to following your journey x

Hi Caroline!
I found up your blog around two weeks ago from shoemoney’s blog.
Already read and downloaded your niche ebook.
It is a great reading and very easy to understand for a newbie and non-english speaker like me! I even got an idea to translate your ebooks to my language, so more people could learn from it too… lol.

I admire how your write and how you pour your idea on this blog. Somehow it is easier to read and understand. Your blog also gave me a lot of inspiration. I was thinking to blog just for fun and socializing, now i am more interested in making money from it. Currently learning and trying actually…. Thanks a ton to you :D

Now i read your blog/feed more than other’s, i guess, that made me your follower :D Keep up your work!!!

Well i guess my long comment suppose to go to the ‘Testimonial Area’, is it??

I really like the comment in the last paragraph. Its so true - be true to yourself in what you write. Its so important I think, that you write about things that interest you, that you like to write about, not producing content just because its full of keywords and made for SEO. Write the content first, and sort the other stuff out once you have good content that you’re happy with.

Caroline,

Fantastic post. I believe people are looking for an essential value exchange.

It’s not good enough just to comment on the world, people are looking for insights and belief/passion. When they find that and it touches some core belief or need within them then they will come back for more.

Your writing is beginning to do that.

Onwards and upwards,

I started blogging last year and I’m not earning much but I don’t mind at all. I blog not for money, though it may come later, but for personal improvement. In high school, I was a writing a diary. All in all my two volumes of diaries totaled 600 pages plus. If the Internet were popular at that time, those 600 pages could have been 600 web pages.

The secret to blogging success is to write with passion.

Is your ebook tied into your RSS subscriber base through aweber?

It’s not the best kept secret anymore that many big name bloggers push an ebook because they know that people who subscribe to the newsletter just to get the ebook will show up as an RSS subscriber because the site uses aweber to manage their newsletters and feeburner allows merging of stats between newsletter subscribers and regular subscribers.

Just curious. Great site btw!
